Located at the Karamea end of the Heaphy Track, the Kohaihai campsite at the mouth of the Kohaihai River is a popular place for campers, camper vans and day visitors who want to experience the Heaphy Track, but don’t want to walk all the way. The Zig Zag Track affords great West Coast sunset views out and over the Tasman Sea and Kohaihai River mouth and Scotts Beach Lookout, Scotts Beach and Katipo Shelter are all good day walks from Kohaihai. There is a large sheltered camping area at Kohaihai, fresh water and toilet facilities and two wood fired BBQs on site.

The Kohaihai River is great for safe swimming, please swim in the river as the sea is very dangerous and there are strong currents, rips and undertows.

Kohaihai is a sandfly hot spot, so please bring sandfly repellent to deter the friendly critters from dining on your haemoglobin.

The section of the track near Koura (Crayfish) Point between Kohaihai and the Heaphy Hut can be dangerous at high tide, please check tide times and plan your trip to ensure you are not crossing this section at two hours either side of high tide. Printable High Tide Tables are available for download from the Department of Conservation.
