Saxon Hut is a comfortable modern hut in a great location among the tussocks at the western end of the Gouland Downs section of the track. There are a lot of interesting scenic spots to explore nearby.  Great Spotted Kiwi can often be heard and sometimes seen in the evenings here. Saxon Hut is named after John Saxon who surveyed the Heaphy Track in 1886. The hut has a wood-fired heater and gas cooking facilities.
