The Heaphy Hut was built in 2013 and is state-of-the-art. It has stunning West Coast sunset views of the Heaphy River meeting the Tasman Sea and a large grassed camping area. Many people walk in from the Karamea end of the Heaphy Track along the very popular and stunning coastal section of the track, stay the night at the Heaphy Hut and return the following day. The cosy hut has solar lighting, double-glazed windows, a wood-fired heater, gas cooking facilities, 32 bunks with mattresses and toilet and ablution facilities.

The section of the track near Koura (Crayfish) Point between Heaphy Hut and Kohaihai can be dangerous at high tide, please check tide times and plan your trip to ensure you are not crossing this section at two hours either side of high tide. Printable High Tide Tables are available for download from the Department of Conservation.
